BTW I just this:

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windo ... windows-11

which says the Microsoft reserved partition "is 16GB" ("The size of the MSR is 16 MB."). Can I just shrink the MSR to 16GB, and then slide it up and then resize the ESP?

Jim, I suggest you resize the OS partition 300 MiB smaller. Then Slide the OS partition so there is zero Free Space After.
Then Slide the Microsoft reserved partition so there is zero Free Space After.
Now try to resize the ESP. Try to resize it to 201 MiB initially. Then try larger increments until you get to 500 MiB.

You can't resize the MSR. Your MSR is 128 MiB. It was created in the early days before Microsoft adopted 16 MiB MSR partitions.

Brian,

Can I do the sliding and resizing you suggest with BIU Partition Work? Or do I have to use some other tool like the MS commands?

That was one thing I wasn't clear on.

Also, this whole thing is kind of scary. I've read that some things can make the laptop unbootable.

So, now I am thinking to by a new 1TB (so double the current drive) 2230 SSD and then maybe image the current one and then restore all the partitions to the new 1TB and then do the partition changes.

Does that sound ok (and safer)?

Thanks,
Jim

Jim, it's a straight forward procedure and I'm sure you have an image backup if the worst happens. Which it won't.

Yes, use BIU Partition Work.

Ask questions if things are unclear. Easy.

Your OS partition will become 250000-300 = 249700

Sliding the OS partition will be time consuming. Have a beer.

Actually, it's a "kill 2 birds" situation. I've been wanting to increase the size of that SSD for awhile (the Vostro has 2 SSD slots a 2230 and a 2280... the 500GB is the 2230 so I've been wanting to bump that to a 1TB 2230), so this gives me the excuse to do that also :)...

Thanks,
Jim

P.S. And yes, I know that the slide (and maybe the resize) is going to take awhile.

P.P.S. Plus if I do the above, it gives me the chance to take a whole drive backup... so maybe "3 birds".

If you want a 1 TB drive, that's fine. But you could find the ESP and the MSR are the same size and in the same position after the Entire drive restore/copy. Then you would still need to do the above procedure.

I'd do the procedure now and upgrade to the larger drive later.

Brian,

I understand, but I think I still want to go ahead with the larger new SSD.

So, I think this is my "plan":

1) Use BIU to do a whole disk image of the current HD1 to an external drive
2) When the new 1TB SSD arrives, install it into the VOSTRO in place of the 500GB SSD
3) Install BIU on the new HD1
4) Use BIU to restore the whole disk image to the new 1TB HD1

Does the above sound ok to get me to the point where I have a working 1TB replacement for the original HD1?

Thanks,
Jim

Jim, I understand why you want to get the 1TB SSD.. All ok.

How are you using BIU at present? Installed or from a boot disk?
